Microstructure of as-coated thermal barrier coatings with varying lifetimes

چکیده
The microstructures of the thermally grown oxide (TGO) in as-coated electron beam physical vapor deposited (EB-PVD) thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) were examined by scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) as a function of demonstrated TBC lifetime in a thermally cycled environment. As-coated TBC specimens were selected for analysis based on individual statistical significance in overall lifetime variation (i.e. early failures to long-lasting). Weibull probability distribution developed through cyclic furnace tests (CFT) served as the medium to determine statistical significance. For selected TBC specimens that represent the variation in lifetime, site-specific specimen preparation for STEM was carried out by focused ion beam (FIB) equipped with in-situ lift-out (INLO) technique. Differences in microstructure of TGO particularly in the mixedoxide and continuous-oxide zone were examined and correlated to the lifetime characteristics of the TBCs. The TGO for durable TBC consisted of fine grained, uniformly thick, and dense mixed-oxide zone in addition to a uniform and smooth microstructural transition into the continuous oxide zone. 2003 Elsevier B.V. Hot Corrosion Behavior of Functional Graded Material Thermal Barrier Coating (RESEARCH NOTE)
In this paper a functional graded material (FGM) thermal barrier coating (TBC) is prepared using Atmospheric Plasma Spraying (APS) method. The FGM layers were deposited by varying the feeding ratio of CYSZ/NiCrAlY and conventional CYSZ on a NiCrALY-coated Inconel 738 substrates. Hot corrosion behavior, bonding strength and the related failure mechanisms of a conventional TBC and a FGM TBC are i...

In the present study NiCrAlY bond coating layer was produced by electroplating against common atmospheric plasma spraying (APS). Both types of the bond coats were applied on IN738LC base metal then, the YSZ (ZrO2-8% Y2O3) thermal barrier top layer was coated by atmospheric plasma spray technique. Hot corrosion is one of the main destructive factors in thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) which come ...

In this paper the effect of plasma spray parameters, atomizing gas and substrate preheat temperature on microstructure and phase composition of YSZ coatings produced by SPPS process have been investigated. The experimental results showed that increasing the power of plasma, using hydrogen as the precursor atomizing gas and increasing substrate preheat temperature decrease the amount of non-pyro...

Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) deposited by Electron-beam physical deposition (EBPVD) protect the turbine blades situated at the high pressure sector of the aircraft and stationary turbines. It is an important task to uphold low thermal conductivity in TBCs during long-term service at elevated temperatures. One of the most promising methods to hlfil this task is to optimize the properties of P...
